History of Human Resource Management

Overview of Human Resource Management By definition, Human Resource Management (HRM) is the strategic and coherent approach to the management of organizations most valued assets; specifically the people working there whom individually and collectively contribute to the achievement of objectives of the business. Simply it is the process of employing people, developing their capacities, utilizing, maintaining and compensating their services in tune with the job and organizational requirement. The goal of HRM is to maximize the production of an organization by using the employees to the best of their abilities and in return offer a better work life then other companies to retain them. Even though these employees performed largely routine tasks, managers faced serious obstacles when trying to manage them since they spoke different languages. Because of this early human resource management techniques included social welfare approaches aimed at helping immigrants adjust to their jobs and to life in the United States. These programs assisted immigrants in learning English and obtaining housing and medical care. In addition, these techniques promoted supervisory training in order to increase productivity.
While some companies paid attention to the workers as people, others did not. This caused hazardous working conditions and pressure from labor unions also increased the importance of effective management of human resources. Labor unions, which had existed as early as 1790 in the United States, became much more powerful during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
There were also two other important factors to the start of HRM during that period. The first was the industrial welfare movement. This movement stressed the fact that the workers were more than just resources but humans to. That movement resulted in the creation of medical care and educational facilities. The second factor was Frederick W. Taylor's book Scientific Management. This book outlined management methods for getting greater production from low-level workers.
