Has Entertainment Changed Throughout the Years? One of the most valuable characteristics of the Romans was the ability to use other cultures and ideas in their own culture. Greek highly influenced Roman sports, however other forms of entertainment such as the ones we have today also took place. Roman sports were primarily created to emphasize violence and help develop and strengthen the military army through the use of these games. Not only did the Romans enjoy sports, but they also attended theatres, the hippodrome, and created festivals as a form of entertainment. The Olympic Games have existed as far back as ancient Greece. They were first originate in an athletic festival. “Of all the games held throughout Greece, the Olympic Games were the most famous” (Olympic Games). The Olympic Games were held in honor of Zeus, since just like most Greek games they were an essential part of a religious festival. What makes this event so popular and unique is that it is held every four years and only professional athletes participate. “At the meeting in 776 BCE there was apparently only one event, a footrace that covered one length of the track at Olympia, but other events were added over the ensuing decades. The race, known as the stade, was about 192 metres (210 yards) long” (Olympic Games). Later events such as the long jump, the javelin throw, the discus throw, a footrace, and wrestling were added.
