What began as a once-a-year, wild impromptu party craze in the mid-1990s now sport a tamer version.
Gone are the days when train carriages in Osaka and Tokyo were literally turned into fast-moving party capsules after being mobbed by foreigners in crazy costumes with a drink or the whole bottle in hand.
Besides dressing up and drinking, the party would sometimes involve, like in Tokyo’s case, shouting the name of the Yamanote Line stations and lots of silly string spray cans as seen in a 1994 video.
Needless to say, Tokyo’s Halloween train earned a lot of frowns and even sparked public protests back then.
