Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is typically associated with a problem only seen in adults. However, children are also at risk of developing gum disease. Seeing blood in the sink is scary for both you and your child, but it is often a warning sign of poor oral hygiene habits, such as not brushing and flossing regularly. Gum disease may be mild, but it can develop into more serious problems, so it is important to know the signs and to seek gum disease treatment as soon as possible.
What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease is a bacterial infection that typically occurs when your child’s gum tissues become infected and inflamed. The infection may spread to the bone and tissues that hold teeth in place and as the disease progresses, small pockets begin to form in their gums, which harbors more bacteria causing the infection to increase. There is also a high risk of gum disease developing in babies who fall asleep with a bottle of formula or juice. It is also common for teenagers that get out of their usual childhood dental regimen to develop gum disease. Some health conditions, such as Downs Syndrome or Type 1 diabetes may also increase the risk of children developing gum disease.
