Virgin and Child created c. 1330-1350 CE in the Ile de France or Normandy out of limestone depicts the Virgin Mary holding presumably the baby Jesus on her hip. Guanyin (Avalokitesvara) created c. 960-1368 CE in China, however, is made primarily of wood and depicts an enlightened Bodhisattva named Guanyin or Avalokitesvara. While both works vary in their size, materials, styles, and subjects, their depictions of religious figures celebrates both of the respective religions of Christianity and Buddhism and seeks to positively portray these prominent figures and show their importance to the practice of these religions.

The most detailed aspects of Virgin and Child are the creases in Mary’s clothing and her and Jesus’s hair. The facial features and the crown are not clearly defined, but they could potentially just be worn with age. The lines that compose the fabric of her dress are shallow and smooth creating a soft depiction of her clothing. The shadows that these lines allow are faint in most areas, with a pretty even light source on it. There a few spots with darker shadows, but for the most part, they are delicate. Both Mary and Jesus’s faces are hard to see because their features are very lightly carved. They are not very detailed and are not finely carved. The lines that compose Guanyin, however, are more sharply carved and are deeper. The features of the crown and face are more clearly defined than they are in Virgin and Child, as well as the beads. The facial features create a more realistically distributed shadow over the cheeks and under the brow bone. The lines in the traditional monk’s robes are not as deeply set, but the layers of the cloth creates a deeper shadow above the inner elbow area. The quality of the lines make it easier to see the overall composition of Guanyin as opposed to the faded look of Virgin and …show more content…
Virgin and Child is made mainly of limestone, a type of greyish-white stone that is typically attributed to the time period that this statue was created. While this work consists of the somewhat shiny quality and somewhat grainy quality of stone, Guanyin was created using wood as a base and using gesso, paint, and gilding to add upon it. This gives the figure a brown color and gives it faint cracks that are qualities of wooden work. On the figure’s cheek, there is a splatter looking mark that is golden in color and slightly shiny. There are also areas of darker color like on parts of the robe, and areas of lighter color like on other areas of the robe to show where the clothing begins and where the body ends. Guanyin is not shiny like some aspects of Virgin and Child are. It has a matte finish about it. The colors and materials help distinguish the time period they were created in and the location they were created

Even though hair is pushed back, you can tell that it is long. Her expression is very loving and caring towards Jesus (as many artworks display her in this style). The young Jesus Christ lower half is covered by a blanket or a piece of Mary’s robe and you can see the outline shape of his foot. His top half is uncovered and he stretches out his right hand to touch his mother’s face in a loving, playful manner. He has short and curly hair and he has a resemblance of a young angel.…

The piece portrays the virgin Mary holding a young baby Christ. The piece is an oil painting that measures 7 by 4 feet, and was created between the years of 1534 through 1540. The Virgin Mary and infant Jesus in Cimabue’s are positioned at the center surrounded by two rows of angels overlapped and four biblical figures in the lower part (of painting). In addition to the symmetry of this piece, it’s important to note how line is used. The arrangement of vertical perspective is used, where the characters in the lower part are utilized with hierarchical scale (it seems to be used with humans and not celestial figures in this artwork). Vertical lines communicate a sense of height and the lines seem to extend upwards towards the sky, or in this case Mary. Considering this observation, I noticed the elongated features of Mary’s face: long almond eyes, long nose, and lengthy fingers.…

The Woman of Willendorf and Women’s role in civilizations Throughout history, it seems that the role of women in different civilizations and their significance and duties in day to day life as well as political and social life has taken many twists and turns. This can also be seen in relatively recent history, the way that women are viewed, treated and the way that they even view themselves and their place in the world has changed significantly even in the last several decades. It is astonishing how, even as far back as the Paleolithic Era, there appears to have been significant emphasis placed on women and their role as child bearers, among other possible things. The Woman of Willendorf sculpture provides us with insight as to some possible views and beliefs that were held toward women during the Paleolithic era of civilization.…

A curvilinear type of geometrical shape is seen on Virgin Mary’s head. Also there is a straight geometrical shape on the table the mother is sitting on. The artist might have decided to use a dark setting which is a better foil for the subtle modelling of his figures. There is a V-shape where the mother bends her head, looking at her baby which implies a negative shape. The braiding of the edges of Virgin Mary’s hair depicts texture.…

When you walk into a church you may realize that there are serval paintings, but what you may have not noticed is their significance. If you look at each painting closely you may notice that they tell a story. The Nativity with the Prophets Isaiah and Ezekiel is a piece of art history which uses iconography and religion to create a narrative. The Rottgen Pieta

The Virgin and Child between Saints Theodore and George serves the same function of being a devotional piece to the Virgin Mary as the Rottgen Pieta. The Rottgen Pieta dates circa 1300 and was created by painted wood. The Virgin Mary is depicted in complete opposite ways in each of the artworks. In the Virgin and Child between Saints Theodore and George, the artist shows the Virgin Mary as a strong, imperial mother by draping her in a dark and bold purple robe. The artist also utilizes hierarchy of scale and placement to show her dominance by placing her in the center of the paper underneath God’s hands and by having her be larger in size than the two Saints on either side of her.…

In the painting, Christ is illuminated by being colored in with very pale colors, but he surrounded by a myriad of colors. Each person depicted in the painting, especially those in the foreground, are each wearing clothes that have different hues, such as the Virgin is wearing blue while the Saint John is wearing red. The colors of each of their clothing are quite intense adding to the energy of the scene. There is also a mix of warm and cool tones throughout the painting, which adds the disorder of the painting. Another important aspect of the painting is the use of color in the middle ground and background.…

    Raphael Vs Cimabue

Virgin and Child Enthroned was painted in the Thirteenth Century, or the Gothic Era, the artists of this time period borrowed from the Byzantine style which included, gold backgrounds, flat disc haloes, and very little to no depth. Due to this, Virgin and Child Enthroned is not really naturalistic, it’s almost stylized. The depth that is shown in Cimabue’s painting, is shown through overlapping figures, and vertical perspective, which makes the angels seem as if they are floating, instead of being planted on the ground. In contrast, Raphael uses chiaroscuro, and atmospheric perspective to create depth. Chiaroscuro, is the shading of forms to give them volume, or depth, and atmospheric perspective is used in landscapes to create the illusion of distance, by having things in the distance being blurred, and lighter, with less contrast.…

Both infants are nude, but Saint John adorns a brown cloth wrapped around his pudgy body. All figures in the painting have faint golden halos around their heads, signifying their holiness. While these figures take up space in the foreground in a pyramidal composition, greenery surrounds them in the background. The figures are enveloped in a state of utter nature-plants spurting off the ground, the fluffy trees employed in the distance, the grassy hills, so much so that the small town pictured in the background seems to have green hues. The sky in the background takes on a muted blue-grayish tonality with faded white clouds.…
