Some can argue the mother of a family controls there family John steinbecks novel “The Grapes of wrath” portrays several unique characters that resemble strength and the drive to find a better life. . On their gruling journey across the united states the joads begin to find out who has what it takes to make it there. The weak slowly die off and strong stay along for the ride to greater lands. From the beging till the end Ma Joad has taken control of this family. She displays a rear characteristic of self-control during the suffering throughout the Joad's journey. Ma is forced to be this aggressive because of the lack of respect due to her gender. The joads respects her for actions such as when the family decided to leave Tom and Casey behind to fix the Wilson's car. The reason ma has this outbreak is becsuae if the joads seperated she knew they would never find each other ever again. She quickly grabs a jack handle to emphasize the importance of staying together. Stienbeck reinforces Ma's leadership when she confronted by a police officer and threatens him with a frying pan.. THe outcome of these confrontation both end in a victory for ma and that much more respect earned. some may say that men are the rock of the family but in this case the mother is the anchor upon this navigating ship. Ma's will and love for her family shall lead the joads to a life they never knew existed but they will always have eachother.
In the Joad's lowest point in the novel, Ma emerges as their leader of an almost broken family. Her ability to step up and lead the family through tough times can be attributed to her love and true dedication. Even a character like Tom joad is just another person who follows ma along for the ride. Some people run and hide, some step aside to follow, and a select few step up and
