“ 'No,' Ma said. 'I ain't tar'd.' “

Being tired is an aspect of life that no one can impede. In this novel Ma Joad is one of the main characters that bonds the family, no matter what the costs. She took the hardest hits when Grandma and Grandpa Joad passed, when her future son in law ran away, and when her oldest son ditched the family at a rest stop. She really wanted the family to be as one. All throughout the book she told Tom Joad, her “favorite” boy, that “The fambly is breakin' up”. Even though she is tired of trying to hold the family together, she does still try. This shows the amount of caring that Ma Joad has, and later in the story you see how this caring for others has “rubbed off” onto Rose of Sharon.

This phrase is spoken by Tom Joad near the beginning of the story. Tom was released from prison only a day before, and hitched a ride with a pickup driver. Just before Tom gets out, the driver asks why he has the suite on, where he came from, and why he needed a ride. Even though he asked this, he assumed he recently was

She thinks this is normal, but suddenly a group of children surround and watch Ma cook the food – like they haven't been fed for days. Ma feels bad and gives the children the little soup that is left over from the meal. The next thing she knows, a lady is coming out of her tent and yelling at Ma for feeding her children. Ma then realizes that the Joads do not even have it the worst as other people. She also realizes that even the poor people can not band together as one. This proves to be another part of the rising action that leads to Tom Joad to split off from the family and start rallying the starving workers to get more workers'

Often, authors use literature as a way to explain a concept or subject that one may not have witnessed themselves. In the novel, "Under The Persimmon Tree", Suzanne Fisher Staples writes a historical fiction story about two main characters, Najmah and Nusrat. During the novel, Staples gives countless examples of what life would feel like to be under the control of the Taliban, an Islamic terrorist group. Najmah is a young girl who lives in the Kunduz Province, Northern Afghanistan. Najmah faces several conflicts right from the beginning of the book.…

In the “The Grapes of Wrath” by John Steinbeck, we follow the Joads as they migrate from Oklahoma to California with family and friends in three stages. I believe that Steinbeck used unsophisticated protagonists and language for the sake of the general public. John Steinbeck wanted this book to be relatable to the public and for people to understand and relate to and feel compassion for the people who felt the hardships of the dust bowl the most. Steinbeck uses a lot of repetition making it easy to relate to the simple characters that Steinbeck has created for us.…

I choose this passage because it evidently shows the unhealthy relationship between Laila and Mammy. At the beginning of the novel it is seen that Fariba is a happy, loving mother but she suddenly changes when her sons leave for war. Although Mammy cares for her daughter she is consumed with her sons departure. Laila is a constant reminder to Mammy of her two sons, as a result Laila is abandoned. Laila is yet very caring and considerate to towards her mother, “ Laila used to sit for hours outside the door.”…
