He was sent off to Fort Leboeuf to warn the French to remove themselves from the land that was claimed by the British. When the French refused, Washington rushed back to Williamsburg and Dinwiddie sent Washington back. But this time he sent him with troops, who then attacked the French post and also killed a commander as well as nine others. This is the start of the French and Indian war, or to some, Seven Years war. It is also the first time Washington had any experience in battle. In a letter to his brother Jack, Washington talks about the war saying “I heard the bullets whistle, and, believe me, there is something charming in the sound.” Unfortunately the French fought right back, forcing Washington to return to his post in Great Meadows. Washington soon surrendered and promised to not build anymore forts. They had planned on attacking Fort Duquesne, Fort Niagra, and Crown Point, which are all French forces, but the French ambushed them leaving Washington with four bullet holes in the cloak.
