OMG, its GMO’s! Most of us have heard of genetically modified organisms (or food). Most every American has consumed some form of a genetically modified food, whether they knew it or not. Genetic modification in food raises many questions with Americans today. From ethics, to social, environmental, technological, the list goes on and on. This article will touch on three major issues such as a brief history, technology and profit, and the labeling of GMO’s. Genetic modification has been going on for, well forever, and it’s taking place right now. Gene mutation is an ongoing and ever changing occurrence, taking place every day. This is something that takes place as needed by Mother Nature to satisfy a need in nature. For centuries people have been manipulating this phenomenon to satisfy their own needs. Creating new biological variations that wouldn’t otherwise occur on its own (Jones 581-4). This tampering has really progressed into a scientific Frankenstein, (for the lack of a better term) more recently with the interest from big chemical companies such as Monsanto, BASF, DuPont, Bayer and Dow Chemical (Edwards 502). These companies create a lot of well-paying jobs, creating quite the social strain between the employees and local residents who don’t agree with genetic modification of their food.
