What Are Gmos Ethical?

Genetically Modified Organisms, or GMOs, have created tension on what is ethical in the food industry. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, GMOs are “genetically engineered foods [that] have had foreign genes inserted into their genetic codes.” Also, many places have found that there are multiple positives and negatives to GMOs, which is why there is such a divide on whether they are healthy to consume. Furthermore, people should know why GMOs are being made, the difference between GMOs and selective breeding, and how genes are chosen and used in GMOs.
One of the first things that a consumer should know about GMOs are why they area even being created. One reason would be that some GMOs allow for the farmer to not have to use as hard of chemicals on their crops that would’ve been used to control/eliminate harmful weeds and insects. These chemicals can be damaging to the groundwater and soil. Another reason would be important nutrients and vitamins can be added to some foods. Selective breeding has been performed for tens of thousands of years. It is when a farmer takes the best crops from his produce and uses them for his next round of farming. While selective breeding can create better produce, it can be very random and take a long time to create a better produce. Also, it is seen as a more natural and safe way to create a better produce. However, GMO technology is much faster and is much more precise. It is more precise because the scientists creating the GMO know exactly what gene is being used and where it is being put in the genome, but this process is not natural.
