World of GMOs While out shopping for food have you ever wondered what is in the food or what makes some foods cheaper? Genetically Modified Organisms, or GMOs, have created many opportunities to lower food prices, but how is this done? Many companies like Monsanto, Clange, Aventis, Dupont, and Syenta have overcome this strange feat to produce food with genes that are modified or engineered to improve production and/ or profit of the company. This is done with a certain process that is used to locate and change the genome’s structure. Companies have the ability to change the DNA and biochemistry of organisms to change the way the plant grows and are able to move DNA from multiple sources. …show more content…
GMOs first got their start in the early 1990s when a California company by the name of Clage created a tomato called Flavor Svr. This tomato was designed to ripen without softening. This was done to help with the shipping issue where tomatoes were picked when they were green and artificially ripened during shipping. The modification Clage created allowed the tomatoes to stay firm from when they were picked to when they arrive at the stores. This tomato had the genetic code changed and then became the first commercial GMO product. This method gained in popularity and a few companies began to increase research into genetically modifying and genetically engineering food to meet their needs. Thus, starting the trend of changing the DNA of food to better the profit margin and make the production process easier (California Agriculture …show more content…
Genetically engineered and genetically modified foods are derived from organisms with their DNA changed using genetic engineering. This technology is practiced by altering or disrupting the genetic blueprint of living organisms such as fish, trees, plants, humans, animals, and microorganisms by following the process previously explained. This technology allows scientist to break down genetic barriers and randomly cut and paste them together. These regions of genomes can be randomly inserted in genes of non-related species - utilizing antibiotic resistant genes, viruses, and bacteria as vectors markers and prompters. This permanently changes the genetic code of that organism. This technology, for the first time in history, allows biotechnology corporations to become the architects and “owners” of life. This technology eliminates the need for farmers to use breeding methods to weed out traits and proteins that are unwanted in the plant or animal (Miller 12). With this bypass biotechnology companies can precisely evolve the DNA to produce the traits that they need. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), genetically modified food is any foodstuff that contains “organisms in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally.” This technology has opened the door for many biotechnology companies to genetically control the way the
