The demand for male nurses is on the rise, partly because there is a growing demand for more nurses in general. That may be part of what has fueled the increase in male nurses so far. The nursing shortage is driven by various factors including an increasingly older population and better access to healthcare for more citizens (“Demand for male nurses,” 2014).
The need for more nurses is vital, especially to help the nursing workforce assure competent, quality care. Many healthcare groups have discussed the importance of increasing ethnic minorities in nursing because a more diverse workforce would better represent a culturally diverse population (“Demand for male nurses”, 2014). The same thing can be said for the importance of male nurses. Having male nurses ensures that male patients are well represented, and that male healthcare needs are fully understood. Nursing education programs need to be reviewed and provide equal and opportunities for all nursing students. Nursing faculty should give accurate information about some origins of nursing of stereotypes and effects of those stereotypes on nursing students in practice (Genua, 2005). Faculty should also provide counselors for discussing problems that emerge during educational experiences. Male counselors should be used to counsel the male students as they can relate to the students issues. Male nurses should be supported by their female colleagues when providing intimate care to women patients. The male nurses should be able to take freely about their experiences (Genua, 2005). Nurses association could also help by removing the she bias, and include both men and women in health practice.
