Since the invention of writing, the humankind has needed to be educated for different contexts. Education has taken a prominent place in human life in upcoming years and the societies have interiorized education as a permanent part of their life long process. By the time of progress, education has been evolved into a system that was diversified based on the societies and so, there has occurred some deficiencies in this system due to gender inequality created by them because all communities have adopted basic social structures that gave places women and men differently. Therefore, it is said that gender inequality is the most effective one which is seen as the most important widespread and significant in general. The right of having education applies to everyone without discrimination of men and women as expressed in Universal Declaration of Human Rights. According to UNICEF (2002), the majority of 120 million children who do not attend school are girls. In Turkey, from the beginning of republic term, regulations was conducted for providing equal education both men and women in accordance with international understanding. Therefore, “generality and equity” and “equality of opportunity” principles by Ministry of Education and the provision of “nobody cannot be deprived of the right to education” by the constitution of the Republic of Turkey were accepted. Moreover, gender inequality in education has been a problem for many government programs and some suggestions are made to provide a solution. In relation to the principles and the provision as above, there are some improvements that can be acceptable as positive changes in terms of schooling for girls. These are “Girls education project” in 1996, 8-year compulsory primary education which is put into practice in 1997-1998 school year, the campaigns that has been carried out in the recent years such as “Girls, Let’s Go to the School” (Haydi Kızlar …show more content…
That’s why gender inequality appears not only in education field but also in work life. Taking into consideration the examples encompassed the gender inequality, even if course books which are used in schools contain gender discrimination in contexts and images. The occupations such as car mechanics, managers, inspectors, engineers are described as men’s jobs and nurses, librarians and secretaries are described as women’s. As a consequence of these, negative women clichés, unshared childcare and some traditional attitudes and school books contain gender discrimination stereotypes which effect women’s education and professional lives
