The civil war from the poin to f view from the slaves was that it was a fight for their chance at life, a chance to learn, a chance fro education. Like many he too had realized that the ability to read and write was what allowed men to be of equals. The only difference between him and others during his time was that he was actaully able to attain his goals of learning and eventually became a writer, spokeman, and champaigner. In one of his books he states that " it was unlawful, as well as unsafe, to teach a slave to reaad...'if you teach that negro to read, there would be no keeping him...'"(Source 1).
