Besides aiding in the digestion and absorption of nutrients, the gastrointestinal tract also participates in the on going immune response of the human body. The gastrointestinal (GI) tract maintains immune homeostasis by protecting the body from potentially harmful microbes and inducing tolerogenic responses. This essay will focus on gut immunology and how the different components work together to yield immune response. It will also discuss the efficiency of the mucosal immune system, and further explore the tolerance of certain pathogens to the mucosal barrier. The lumen of the GI tract is heavily populated with potentially pathogenic microorganisms, thus immunological components are established and maintained at the mucosal …show more content…
For instance, it increases internal permeability in replay to particular stimulations. It also reorients the immune response towards the luminal content, which allows for either tolerance or elimination of luminal antigens (3). In some cases, the GALT also provokes damage to the intestinal mucosa. This occurs in response to food allergy or diseases within the GI tract such as celiac disease. This article discusses the role of GALT in relation to different allergies. GALT is able to induce immunotolerance mechanisms to food proteins commonly introduced in different diets (3). It further discusses the role of the lymphocytes Th1 (T helper cell) and T regulatory cells in the immunotolerance mechanism of GALT. This article highlights the role of GALT during allergies and GI tract …show more content…
Probiotics, which is stimulated by prebiotic fermentation, are important to the development and sustainment of intestinal defenses (5). This is because probiotics can stimulate the synthesis and secretion of antibody polymeric IgA, which coats and protects mucosal surfaces against harmful bacterial invasion (5). Furthermore, another article focused on research that has be done regarding the health benefits of probiotics and its properties in fighting against different inflammatory responses (6). Certain probiotics have been found to maintain intestinal equilibrium by enhancing the gut mucosal barrier via manipulation of expression of several their own and the host's genes (6). The information gathered demonstrates the many ways the role of the GI tract in immune response can be further analyzed and manipulated to better comprehend mechanisms and
