Merriam-Webster defines Freedom as the quality or state of being free; a political right. A political right that has been withheld from people of certain race and socio-economic status throughout history. With those whom are considered to be of lower socio-economic status having their rights withheld the more often then those of higher socio-economic status. With that said, it is common knowledge that the majority of people of African descent are considered to be on the lower end in regard to socio-economic status. The Freedom of people of African descent in America has been restricted by Slavery, Jim Crow and Mass Incarceration. The first African slaves were brought to the North American colony of Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619, to aid in the production of such lucrative crops as tobacco and that is when Slavery began. Slavery was practiced throughout the American colonies in the 17th and 18th centuries, and African-American slaves helped build the economic foundations of the new nation. The institution of slavery is the most obvious restriction of the freedom of people of African descent. In the book, Black Reconstruction written by W.E.B Dubois, Dubois says “The old difficulties appeared in a new dress. It became easy to say and easier to prove that these black men were not men in the sense that white men were, and could never be, in the same sense, free. Their slavery was a matter of both race and social condition, but the condition was limited and determined by race.…
