Federal money should be used for necessary programs that the city or state would normally be funding anyways. I decided to attend Florida A&M University (FAMU) for a variety of reasons, including the location of its campus, because I was offered a full scholarship, and of course, because of the pharmacy program. Moreover, I believe that I am the ideal candidate for being a part of FAMU’s pharmacy program. To begin, FAMU is located in Tallahassee, Florida, a city that I had wanted to attend college in since I was in elementary school. First-generation college students, defined as those students whose parents have no more than a high school education (Pascarella et al., 2004), tend to have lower graduation rates than their non-first generation peers (Stebleton & Soria, ) and are twice as likely to leave 4-year institutions before the second year (Bringle, Hatcher, & Muthiah, 2010). In fact, almost half (43%) of first-generation students entering college leave before completing their degree as compared to 20% of other students (Chen & Carroll, 2005).
