According to the survey from the Boston College Center for Work and Family, a majority of professional fathers reported that they favored juggling between work and family roles because it allows them time with their children (Harrington, Van Deusen, & Humberd, 2011). This observation provides new insight that working fathers find it more rewarding and enjoyable to spend their second shift taking care of their children and other associated responsibilities at home (Cabrera et al., 2000). The new fathering ideal is showing that more men are interested in being a part of their children’s growth and development. It is becoming more fulfilling for fathers to be engaged in this aspect of their children’s life than just simply being their provider in the sense that they make sure all their physical needs are met. Fathers play a fundamental role in the development of their children’s social intelligence, motor development, language development, and cognitive skills. Being a part of this and knowing that their involvement plays a fundamental role in their children’s healthy development across these areas gives working fathers the strength and courage to withstand work-family pressures. It is becoming exceedingly important for fathers to do all they can do in this new era of parenting where the dynamic of the family is drastically changing to be more than what society has expected them to be in the past; a mere breadwinner.
