Herodotus tells us that opinion among the Athenian commanders was divided with some opposed to attacking with their heavily outnumbered force. Others, especially Miltiades supported an offensive strategy. Miltiades is credited with persuading the war archon Callimachus through a stirring speech to cast his deciding vote in favour of an offensive strategy. Herodotus in his narrative has Miltiades say ‘If we refuse to fight, I have little doubt that the result will be bitter”. However it has also been suggested that the Greek offensive was based on the apparent absence of the Persian cavalry which Herodotus fails to mention.…

Ancient Greece can be traced back to the Stone Age hunters (6000-2900 B.C.); however, Greek culture was much more notable from 1100-146 B.C., and likely had a more profound impact on Western civilization than any other culture. From 1100-750 B.C., a period known as the Dark Ages, Ancient Greece was immersed with wars and invasions and, over time, was divided into small, city states. During the Archaic Period (750-500 B.C.), art, the beginnings of democracy, and the knowledge and understanding of the written language started to re-emerge. The Greeks fought the Persians during the Classical Period (500-336 B.C.) and Athens reached its greatest political and cultural heights, including full development of a democratic plan of government (Document…
Alexander the Great was a significant historical figure who was as great a commander as his name suggests. Whether it be his two million square miles of conquered land, or his contribution to science through his expeditions, he certainly was one of the most important people of his time. In fact, Alexander the Great had such a lasting effect, the era after him was named “The Hellenistic Period”, from Hellas, which is the word for Greece. Alexander the Great was a fearsome figure of the ancient times, who had conquered Egypt, Central Asia, and had even beat Persia’s army. Historical evidence suggests that Darius III, the then king of Persia, had set the battlefield to his favor.…

Greek life on college campuses is an effective way to ensure that students get the most out of college, and all that it has to offer. It is my belief that even though very similar, Ancient Greece has a broader and more vivid culture than modern day Greece. Ancient Greece has many great achievements in government, science, philosophy, and the arts that all still influence us today. Religion over the years in Greece has changed. Ancient Greece’s religion was very accustom to their daily life. People in Ancient Greece were very religious.…
We are each gone all day to either work or school, so once we’re all home we eat supper together and spend a couple of hours just relaxing and watching television or something. Family dinner has never been the kind of thing where children eat in their room and ignore the parents. My mom and dad have always insisted that we all eat together with the television off. After dinner, my mom and I clear the table and then we just spend time together. This is a ritual that I am grateful for.…
