As Patrick Henry said in 1775, “Give me liberty or give me death!” The founding fathers of our country gave it all so you and I could have freedom. What some people do not realize is that if the founding fathers had gotten caught or if we had lost the Revolutionary War, the founding fathers would have been hung for treason. They put their lives on the line to provide freedom for many generations to come. We can celebrate the Fourth of July and have fun, but we also need to remember what our forefathers had to do to get us to this point. When I wake up on the Fourth of July, I usually grab the dessert that my mom and I cooked the day before and get into the family vehicle. We then head to Jones Chapel, Alabama. we start preparing the food for a late lunch around 1 p.m. The entire family help prepare the meal. The men go outside and grill the hamburgers and hotdogs. My dad usually brings Anaheim peppers to grill and stuff with cheddar cheese. Inside the house the women prepare the side dishes and desserts. For sides we usually prepare sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, mayonnaise based slaw, and potato salad. For desserts we prepare cheesecake topped with blueberries, butter cake, and strawberry pizza. Once everything is prepared we all pile our plates high with all of the scrumptious food. Gathering around the table we fellowship with one another as we eat. After we eat, we all help clean dishes and clear the table off. Then we gather around the table once more to play a large assortment of bored games. Everyone usually plays with the exception of a couple who would rather watch. In all we have bucket loads of fun at my grandparents for the Fourth of July. The Fourth of July is a holiday where most people spend time with their family. It is completely acceptable to spend time with family and have fun on this wonderful holiday. However, we should never forget about the men who put their lives on the line by signing the Declaration of Independence. The Fourth of July is a day where we stop and thank those men for making the country that we love, the United States of America.
