Exercise and Chronic Medical Conditions
Research has shown that exercise has a vital effect on preventing and treating chronic medical conditions. Chronic illness “refers to health problems that persist over extended periods and often (but not always) associated with participation and activity limitations (disability)” (Goodridge, 2014, p. 69). Some common chronic medical conditions include chronic heart disease, and diabetes. Accordingly, the signs and symptoms of these chronic illnesses are not visible until the illness is already fatal for the person. “BDNF reduces food intake, increases oxidation of glucose, lowers blood glucose levels, and increases insulin sensitivity” (Meeusen, 2014, p. 49). Diabetes occurs when there is too much sugar or glucose in the blood, which causes the body to produce a lot of insulin. Then, if the body cannot produce any more insulin, it is hard for the body to inhibit the sugar or glucose. However, when a person exercise the activation of BDNF will initiate its action to increase the insulin sensitivity, which is important in regulating the blood glucose in the body. On the other hand, people who have a high blood pressure (HBP) are at risk for chronic heart disease. To lower the risks of having chronic heart diseases, it is important to exercise because it decreases the blood pressure. “The decrease of BP during submaximal exercise may lower the rate pressure product, which indicates the decrease of myocardial oxygen consumption” (Ching, Ssu-Yuan, May-Kuen, & Jin Shin, L, 2013, p. 2). Indeed, exercising does not need to be vigorous in order to be effective because as long as the person moves his or her muscles, it can activate several organs to function effectively and efficiently. According to Yardley & Sigal (2015), “Regular physical activity is associated with a plethora of health benefits for individuals with type 1 diabetes, including improved cardiovascular fitness and vascular health, decreased insulin requirements, improved body composition, and better self-rated quality of life” (p. 32). From examining the findings, it generally agreed that the effects of exercise in relation to chronic medical conditions are proven beneficial.
