Effective classroom management is an essential goal for all teachers. Teaching young children can be tough job, especially in a large class. A teacher needs to have the ability to manage student behavior by using effective classroom management strategies. “Classroom management is not about controlling students or demanding perfect behavior. Instead, effective management is about supporting students to manage themselves throughout daily learning and activities.” (Jones, 2014) On this paper at least five best classroom management strategies will be discussed. The five effective classroom management strategies are; being organized, positive teacher-student relationship, having classroom rules, positive reinforcement, and keeping students engaged. Being organized and prepared is essential in order to have a successful classroom. Teachers are expected to fill many roles, for that reason having the ability to be organized themselves, the classroom, and their students will help greatly in being an effective teacher. “Classroom management is intended to provide students with more opportunities to learn all of the things that a teacher does to organize students, space, time, and materials so that students´ learning can take place.” (Sieberer-Nagler, 2016) Being organized also helps set a good example, some students struggle with organization so if the teacher is organized, it will help the students become organized. Teachers are looked up to by some of the students, for that reason it is important to model proper behavior, including staying organized. “A well-managed classroom includes direct material supports as well as a consistent set of routines and structures throughout the day. Posters, charts, or a calm-down corner are examples of material support; they remind students of classroom expectations and provide visual or physical tools to help students achieve them.” (Jones, 2014) Posting the day schedule on the board for students and going over it with them every morning before class, will help the student know what is expected of them. Creating a positive teacher-student relationship is the best thing a teacher can do. Connecting with the students and building positive relationships, will make a huge difference in how students perform in the school. There are many benefits to developing a relationship with the students. “building better relationships with students can impact the number of discipline referrals, student attendance, achievement, and retention.” (Hinton, 2011) A student is more likely to trust the teacher, show engagement in learning, and behave better in class when there is a strong personal connection as well. “Establishing a safe, secure, and trusting environment which accentuates human relationships allows students to reach a higher level of academic achievement. Research indicated that teaching students how to self-evaluate their behavior and classroom performance has resulted in a decrease in teacher referrals for discipline and other problems.” (Hinton, 2011). All students have different learning paces; they do not all learn at the same pace. It is important to be mindful of the students who do not understand the topic and help them get up to where they need to be. Struggling students need extra attention and support from the teacher. When a student is struggling it can lead to acting out therefore, it is necessary for the teacher to give extra attention to the struggling students. On the other hand, the students who finish early become bored and that will also cause problems. A great thing the teacher can do in this situation is to have challenging quiet activities for the students who move more quickly with their school work. “Another suggestion is to share responsibility by having student’s complete classroom tasks such as taking attendance or lunch count, updating the calendar or caring for a class pet” (Garrett, 2016) Using movement to get children focused is a great example. It can be as simple as getting the wiggles out.
In conclusion, student learning is successful when the teacher is able to manage the class. Organization, connecting with the students, having classroom rules, positive reinforcement, and finally keeping student busy are all great examples of effective classroom management strategies. A teacher needs to have the knowledge and apply effective classroom management strategies in order for students to be successful in the classroom. When unexpected events come up the teacher will have the ability to control student behavior by using the effective classroom management
