Good classroom management starts on the first day of school. It does not work if you start out by being the “nice and fun” teacher. It is essential that my students know on the first day of school that I will not tolerate disrespect and chaos. On the first day of school I went over my class rules with the students and pointed out where the class rules are posted if students ever need reference. Once I have established my class rules, the students were given time to collaborate and come up with some of their own rules that they felt were necessary to establish a safe and welcoming learning environment.
Throughout the year the students are reminded of the class rules in several ways. Whenever …show more content…
The first six weeks I spent the majority of my free time on the phone with parents or emailing parents. There is a program we use in my current district called Parent-Link. This program allows me to send out mass phone calls, emails and text messages to the parents of my students. During the first week of school I opened the lines of communication and I sent out a Parent-Link introducing myself to the parents of my students. When progress report time rolled around I started calling parents. I compiled a list of each student who was failing, what their grade was and why they were failing. This allowed me to reach parents and let them know why exactly I felt their student wasn’t successful come progress report time. I felt this was necessary because parents usually know that their students are failing, but why the student thinks their failing and why I think the student is failing are usually two different stories. I personally feel that these phone calls are important because they allow the parents to step up and play a larger role in their student’s education. Failing grades are not the only reason I call home. My favorite thing that I’ve done this year is I’ve picked one student from each class each grading period and called their parents. I picked them because they had the highest grade in the class that grading period or they failed last grading period but pulled off a B this grading period. These are my favorite phone calls because I love hearing how happy this makes the parents and it brings me such joy that I can brag on their students. My least favorite phone calls are the discipline problems. I have the tally system mentioned in a previous question, but I understand that sometimes students just have a bad day. I try to talk to my students before I jump the gun and call home. However, a phone call or email home is sometimes necessary when a problem persists. This is done
