In Order to succeed you must fail first, and this is the path Miller sets Proctor on. Proctor is a father, husband, and a working man who is passionate about all he does. Due to his dishonesty, Procot is forced any hardships that may come from it. This is most widely seen in the beginning of The Crucible. Proctor had committed a sin by cheating on his wife with a young girl, Abigail. By saying to Abigail, “. . . I’ll not be comin’ for you more” () he is making a promise to himself and to his wife not to be with the young girl again in a provocative way. If there is ever a time negative words are spoken about him or his family, he will become defensive by putting his foot down and standing up for his name. In The Crucible, Proctor needs the honesty of his wife to help put Abigail's act to rest. Proctor claims that Elizabeth, “In her life . . . has never lied” (). He has fallen to Elizabeth's honesty to claim Abigail guilty of crime. The way Proctor is defensive and passionate over his wife's truthfulness is what convinces Danforth to listen to what she has to say.
