Wk. 2 Evangelism and Discipleship Paper
Who is George Hunter III? I asked myself when reading our textbook. At first, I wondered if he was a bowling enthusiast because of his ten pins model of discipleship. I wondered if he had just rolled a strike when the Holy Spirit struck him with the idea of a ten pin model for discipleship. As my insatiable curiosity got the best of me, I decided to do some research on Mr. George Hunter III.
Now, I see why John Aukerman referred to him in his textbook on discipleship. Mr. Hunter is an expert on discipleship and noted for training church leaders in the ministry of evangelism. I like that. There is no better way to start out than with prayer. Jesus Christ came to “seek and save the lost” (Luke 19:10 KJV) and you better believe that when someone is seeking Him, He readily makes Himself available to them. God is in the people business and saving souls is His mission passed on to every believer. He has empowered His disciples with the Holy Spirit to go unto the uttermost part of the world proclaiming His Gospel message to all.
Pin two is “New relationship with God”. 2Co 5:17 (KJV) “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new”. We are regenerated and have a new nature and a new relationship with God. We are in His family and as the children of our new Father have received all spiritual blessings and have a heavenly inheritance. His Word is the ultimate authority and there is nothing anyone can say that changes that. The only thing that should be said is Amen.
He that has an ear, let him hear and how shall they hear without a preacher? (Rom 10:14 KJV). The role of evangelism is vital in Christian education. Unless there are people, who is going to be educated in the Christian faith. Sheep get sheep, and disciples make disciples. Jesus made that clear when He gave His commission to every believer. Every believer must be educated to know that it is not only the pastor or leaders in the church responsibility to proclaim the Gospel but every believer is to obey that command.
Our churches today, seem to have placed a priority on other programs and place the program of evangelism on the back burner. The early church exploded onto the scene and that was because of the obedience of the people to evangelize. There is a need for revival in our church and we are in the process of revamping our Christian education program to revive our evangelism
