For this research project I ensured that I followed the ethical guidelines of the University of Hertfordshire whilst planning for and carrying out my small scale survey (see appendix for ethics approval sheet) Due to the sensitive nature of this research topic a number of ethical considerations had to be recognised and discussed. First and foremost, it is important to note that I chose not to distribute my questionnaire to children or any young person under the age of 18, therefore parental consent did not have to be sought out. Upon the distribution of the questionnaire to potential participants; I ensured that I provided them with a short briefing statement explaining the purpose of the questionnaire, explicitly stating …show more content…
On the other hand the promise of Confidentiality was given. Judith bell explains that confidentiality can be broken unwittingly, however I ensured that any questionnaires from the respondents were kept safely locked up in a file as suggested in the University of Hertfordshire ethics guidelines; institutions were not named, and that respondents were unidentifiable.
Analysis of Pilot study
From the feedback I received from the distribution of my pilot, it was clear that the questions asked were relevant to my chosen topic and were prevalent within the primary school. However, a couple of issues arose. Firstly, the wording used in question three (see appendix) was altered as the participant highlighted that the question would read better and that it would relate to question four. Furthermore it became clear that the participant would have liked to have been able to express their own opinions on certain questions rather than being limited to using the scale. With this in mind, if I were to redesign the questionnaire I would have chosen to use a mixed methodology approach, whereby I would have used both quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection. Creswell and Clark (2007) state that using both quantitative and qualitative methods provide a greater understanding of the research topic …show more content…
It is my view that more needs to be done within the school if homophobic bullying is to be tackled and significantly reduced. It seems that schools/teachers need to create a more positive and social environment to ensure that all homophobic language and actions are challenged and eliminated.
Although, this research project did not analyse the data collected from the questionnaires, it can be argued that the small sample size (one student teacher) has significant limitations on the results. A bigger sample size would allow for better understanding of the issues of teacher preparedness to address issues of homophobia within the school. Furthermore, only using quantitative data has its own implications, due to the limited answers that can be provided by the respondent (Judith bell
