The goal within every educational institution is to provide an environment that is conducive to learning. Ultimately, academia’s purpose is to broaden a student’s intellectual knowledge; although, the current state of academia has many visible shortfalls. To ensure individual growth, facilitators must not focus on proving to colleagues and parents that they can essentially ‘run’ a classroom, but they must focus on effectually providing a community in which a student can interact and truly prosper. However, this focus may seem unclear to teachers, as administrators during in-class evaluations typically exude a tone of “impress me.”
More importantly, how legitimate or valuable is an evaluation of a teacher if it is completed based on a single, scheduled instance? Evaluation is a critical step in determining what methods and practices are reaching students; therefore, it should be completed by those who can accurately depict a teacher’s overall impact. Mr. Steve Wyrick, the facilitator of ENG-1101 and ENG-1201 at Wayne High School, is evaluated not only by his administrators but also by his students. This is due to the fact that one of the points graded in the ENG-1101 papers was how well each student supported the indicators and qualities he or she mentioned with specific evidence. Therefore, an indicator may have been mentioned more due to the availability of evidence to support it. This research may not serve to show what qualities and indicators all students find important; however, this data is understandably applicable in Wyrick’s classroom. By collecting and reviewing this data, Wyrick is able to see the indicators and qualities he effectively demonstrates in the classroom, but Wyrick can also see the indicators and qualities that he does not effectively
