Anale has several factors, both positive and negative, that shape her English language acquisition abilities. Factors that can be seen as negative influences regarding her development in English are that she has moved around a lot, during her many moves been exposed to a variety of different languages, and Spanish being the primary language in her home and neighborhood. Positive factors that might influence her English language acquisition abilities are her motivation to learn English, Anale likes going to school, her grandparents value learning English and encourage her to learn to it, she is not intimidated by making mistakes, and takes correction from her teacher well. In 2012, the population of Latino children was 24%, and is expected to increase to 36% by 2050. Data Collection Procedure: In order to conduct this study, each student was provided a consent form to be signed by their parents and a demographic questionnaire (Appendices A&B ), which revealed that they had no prior exposure to the French language, and that all “of them had lived and studied Spanish in a Spanish-speaking country for a period ranging from” (Achard & Niemer, 2004, p.21), five to ten years. Additionally, the questionnaire revealed that the participants have been in the United States between six and ten years. Of the thirty-four participants, thirteen of their parents are high school graduates from their native countries who did not continue on to college, and the twenty-one others did not go beyond eighth grade, even though they “value and respect education” (according to a student). After reading this informative chapter, I still believe that high-stakes testing is a disservice to many students, and teachers, not politicians, should make decisions about assessments. Teachers are responsible for educating our youth, so they should be the ones who determine whether or not students understand the curriculum. Crawford begins by comparing the differing views of those in favor of bilingual education and supporters of English-only instruction. Bilingual educators have long had to explain the achievement gap between ELLs and native English speakers. I do not believe that bilingual education is the problem, but these teachers may need to be better trained to reach these unique students and their needs.…
