English Language Data Collection Assessment

Data Collection Procedure: In order to conduct this study, each student was provided a consent form to be signed by their parents and a demographic questionnaire (Appendices A&B ), which revealed that they had no prior exposure to the French language, and that all “of them had lived and studied Spanish in a Spanish-speaking country for a period ranging from” (Achard & Niemer, 2004, p.21), five to ten years. Additionally, the questionnaire revealed that the participants have been in the United States between six and ten years. Of the thirty-four participants, thirteen of their parents are high school graduates from their native countries who did not continue on to college, and the twenty-one others did not go beyond eighth grade, even though they “value and respect education” (according to a student). Once they were seated, they completed the posttest on numbers (Appendix E). After completing the posttest, students worked in pairs to practice pronunciation of numbers (Appendix F). I walked around with a checklist to make sure they were on task and that they were producing language in French (Table 3B, page 20). Students were asked to get back in their assigned seats in order to go over the new lesson objectives. I explained that they were going to learn the body parts in French. I also explained to them that they were going to take a pretest on the body parts, which was to be completed in ten minutes. The seventeen students of the experimental group completed the 10-item vocabulary fill-in pretest, and were asked to translate the body parts in English. Since the students just had to translate the French vocabulary words which were given on the pretest, it was not necessary to write the target vocabulary on the board. Students were graded on their academic performance on the pretest, which had ten items, each worth 10 points. This grade item was worth 100 points (Appendix
