The pain and suffering that animals involved in experiments are exposed to is not worth any gain to humans. Animals experience pain in the same ways that humans do. In fact, an animal’s reactions to pain are practically the same. For example, both humans and animals scream when in pain. When animals are used for testing a products toxicity, they are subjected to painful and generally deadly experiments. Two tests that are commonly used for toxicity are the LD-50 test and the Draize test, both of which are notorious for the excruciating pain and suffering they cause the animals involved with the experiment to endure. The Lethal Dose-50% test, more commonly known as the LD-50 test, is used to test the amount of a substance that is required to cause death in fifty percent of the animals within a certain time frame. In order to perform this test, experimenters hook tubes to the animals to pump huge amounts of the product being tested into the animals’ stomach until the die. Death can take days or even weeks to ensure so, for obvious reasons, this is extremely painful to the animals. According to Orlans, the animals suffer from “paralysis, vomiting, convulsion, diarrhea, and internal bleeding. Since death is the required result, animals that are on the brink of death are not put out of their suffering by euthanasia” (154).
