As sleep, addiction effects our behaviors and physical states of the body. Addiction can be referred to as a state in which one perceives intense intolerable desire for something because the response after contact with the stimuli simulated perceived pleasurable response. Consequently, Internet addiction has been acknowledged as a clinical diagnosis. Internet addiction is a compulsive–impulsive spectrum disorder, involving online and/or offline computer usage for excessive gaming, sexual preoccupations, and e-mail, and is known to have an effect on the structures of the brain. Zhoua, Linb, Duc, Qina, Zhaoc, Xua, Lei (2008) examined the density of grey matter in individuals diagnosed with Internet addiction compared with a control group of participants through Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Voxel-Based Morphometry. They found IA group had lower grey matter density in the left anterior Cingulate cortex, left cingulate gyrus and left insula. However, there was no significant difference of white matter density between the two groups. They further noted the behaviors associated with those specific parts of the brain areas. They acknowledged that the exact meaning of those finding cannot be exactly be determined, but they provide insight into the pathogenesis of IA. Researchers have demonstrated that technology has an indirect effect on the physical body, however there are studies indicating that it also has a direct effect on the body.
