Are People Smarter Than You Think Analysis

Humans are continuously working on researches that can make their life better. Technologies are the product of those researches. After many researchers’ dedications, technologies have become very advanced in modern days. From simply a cell phone to a complex satellite, humans’ lives are becoming more convenient because of the technologies. However, as the convenience that technologies have brought began to blend into humans’ lives, many negative effects also start to emerge. Nicholas Carr, the writer of Is Google Making Us Stupid, has shown that how technologies have made people lose their ability to concentrate. Sherry Turkle, a professor of social science and technology at MIT, has shown that how technologies have broken the relations between people. In my perspective, technologies are drugs that have been devastating humans’ lives by making humans stupid and causing people to lose the ability to interact with others. Clive Thompson, author of Smarter than You Think, has claimed that technologies have made people smarter. In Smarter than You Think, Thompson shows that chess players has used chess software to increase their overall tactics and made more young chess players to become grand masters (Thompson 359). In other words, Thompson thinks that technology, the chess software, has made chess players smarter. However, people are over reliant on the technologies, which cause them to lose their ability to generate ideas. One of the most famous examples is the chess master Christoph Natsidis got caught using a mobile phone illegally during a chess contest (357). Christoph was over reliant on chess software in his daily practices, which causes him to lose his ability to think by himself. Currently, humans were over reliant on technologies, which make them stupid because they lose the ability to thinking by their
