First, I was amazed to know that high percentage of accounting firms have reported poor writing skills as one of the reason for job termination. I have always thought that entry level accountants are expected to write few line memos. Also, in my previous internships, my communication was restricted to few line memos to my supervisor. My biggest challenge was inability to work with excel and other technical program. Hence, it was a surprise that inadequate communication skills can have such an adverse effect. Second, I was amazed to know that Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) requires ‘plain English’ disclosures for its registration statements. I have always thought these statements will be full of legal jargons and only few individuals can comprehend it. However, now I realize that even a formal business document should be clear and understandable rather than full of difficult terminologies. Third, I liked the concept that business writing should be concise. I have always believed that having more is better than being brief. Nevertheless, as effective writing requires conciseness, I will strive to write more concisely and to the point. Fourth, it was interesting to know that some people are good writers. However, they don’t have adequate training or they had unpleasant experience of writing about a topic they didn’t like. I feel I have kind of created aversion from writing curses because of unpleasant history essays I had to write in my undergraduate courses. After reading the section “You can become a good writer”, I am feeling bit hopeful that with good training, I will be able to write well about accounting issues that interests me to a great extent. Next, I appreciate that how author has emphasized that writing is entwined with reading, listening and speaking skills. Sometimes, due to work related stuff, I used to occasionally miss my classes.
