Throughout my academic career, I have taken and been successful in a large number of English classes. In high school, my writing followed an academic format, mostly writing towards a prompt. Although I was able to gain writing practice, I never received a large amount of feedback that I could use to help myself in the future. Similarly, when I started college I practiced different forms of academic writing, structured around a prompt and focused on the end goal of a good grade. However, in college I was able to start gaining useful feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of my writing that I could apply to later assignments.

Through my analysis in the table above, I have determined that the areas of writing I need to focus on are organization, strategy, word choice, and clarity. While some errors are easy to fix, others will require more effort.
Areas of Development
By looking at past assignments, I have identified three main weaknesses in my writing and have determined how to solve those issues. In the following paragraphs, I outline each weakness, give an example, and explain how I plan to address the issue in future …show more content…
In the past, I never learned how to distinguish between passive voice and active voice, so I became accustomed to writing in either style. Although I am now aware of the differences between active and passive voice, I still find myself writing in passive voice because of habit. However, I plan to work on this by rearranging all of my sentences to all be active when I am revising my assignments. Another clarity principle that I need to work on is use of expletives. For example, I used the phrase “it is” in one of my assignments when I should have used the specific subject I was referring to. To address this issue in the future, I plan to search my documents for the terms “it” and “is” to locate any possible expletives and then rewrite them.
Writing Strategy
A common trend I noticed when examining my past assignments was that my closings do not follow the proper writing strategy. I tend to have short conclusions that do not provide enough of a positive look forward. When ending my messages, I need to remember to add more goodwill in order to properly follow business writing strategy. As evidenced in Table 1, this issue has occurred more than once in my past assignments. I plan to go back to the textbook to read examples of how to build goodwill that I will be able to incorporate into my future assignments.
