Conciseness
I am starting with conciseness which basically means covering all of the key points that are required to be incorporated in the written communication. First thing to remember is that you are conveying the information in as few words as possible with no repetition or needless information. For example, when I create a call screen at work that is directed to our first responders, I place relevant information in that screen that will describe exactly what kind of call they are responding to. Knowing what is expected when you send out the written communication is essential to providing the correct information to the recipient and to retain your credibility. Failing to meet the expectations leads to further questions that could be covered in the original communications if the sender finds out what is expected to be included before sending. One area of meeting expectations in 911 dispatch is the location and nature of the incident. These two items are essential and are expected to be correct as a mistake could mean the difference between life and death. A second example would be on a robbery that just occurred, the officers expect a description of the suspects along with the vehicle and any direction of travel that may be known.
