Back in the day it would take hours of research through multiple textbooks just to learn about a simple topic like volcanoes, but now thanks to new technology the under thirty generation can learn the same amount in a matter of minutes. Thanks to the new modern day technology that the under thirty generation has grown up with had helped them learn at a much better rate than previous ones before them. The claim that the under thirty generation is the dumbest generation is untrue, as new media is pushing their literacy skills, they’re using the internet to become masters at skills that interest them, and they are able to choose what they deem necessary to learn based on what’s relevant in their lives.

Mizuki Ito says”The digital world lowers barriers to self-dedicated learning”(source C). Any generation before the under thirty generation didn’t have the time it took to teach themselves about topics not typically taught because they didn’t have technology like the under thirty generation now has. This is just another way that the under thirty generation can’t be the dumbest generation. In a cartoon published by the New Yorker it shows a man using a laptop top to teach himself about something that interests him(source H). The man is able to teach himself whatever he wants rather than having to dig through hundreds of books to find the info like previous generations would have to do. This shows that the underthirty generation is much more efficient and can get more done. Although new generations are great at teaching themselves thanks to the freedom media provides, they still struggle in “classroom learning that is oriented toward set, predefined goals”(source C). Although the generation is great at teaching themselves they are struggling in lessons that give them less freedom. This is the one downside to the under thirty having that much freedom to explore new topics. The generation under thirty is not the dumbest generation because they are using media to teach themselves to be masters of topics that interest them, however …show more content…
Sharon Begley says “who’s to say they are dumb because fewer of them than of their grandparents’ generation care who wrote ontario ‘messia’”(source B). Some older generations would consider someone dumb for not knowing that information but the simple truth is it’s not necessary for people to know now a days. That’s what differs the under thirty generation from those before them, they have the option to choose what they need to know. In a cartoon published by the New Yorker it shows young man choosing what he needs to learn by using a laptop rather than all the old books(source H). Rather than using the books he uses his laptop to choose what he needs to know. The generation under thirty isn’t dumb they just choose not to know specific things. However in a survey amongst candidates applying for a government job most candidates “had no clear idea as to the principal products of their country, nor as to its exports and imports. They could name a few of each, but had no notion of their relative importance and had given no thought to the role of imports in the American economy”(source E). Although they choose what they don’t know in this case they chose wrong. The downfall of choosing what you should not know is when you choose not to know about something you should’ve. The under thirty is not the dumbest generation because they are
