Dumbest Generation: The Feminist Generation

Decent Essays
The term “dumbest generation” is relevant to the time period, people, and economic circumstances regarding it. Determining what generation is “dumb” completely relies on the questions being asked. Some ideas or concepts are not in use anymore, making it incorrect to use that information as a comparison. Using the term of “dumbest generation” is a serious accusation, just because technology is relied on more today than in the past, does not mean that the current generation is the dumbest. In the article entitled “ 4 Myths About Undocumented Immigrants That Are Hurting Feminism” written by Alan Pelaez Lopez, Lopez goes through four myths which surround undocumented immigrants, explains how these myths hurt feminism and how they affect his own life and understanding. Some of the myths which Lopez discusses are the idea that people believe undocumented youth did not migrate of their own free will, during this section he also discusses how the term DREAMer can be a form of oppression. Lopez also explains that not all undocumented people cross the border between the United States and Mexico. He then expands on this topic by reminding readers that not all undocumented immigrants are Latinx, Lopez even explains that he is an immigrant, he is both black and Latinx, and finds it difficult that society sees immigration as only a Latinx issues.…

Out of all the generations that are still alive today, from the Greatest Generation to the Baby Boomers to Gen X, this generation of Millennials and Gen Z are, by far, the dumbest generation. Or so many people seem to believe. They argue that the youth have seemingly no knowledge of even the most basic information and with the increasing availability of technology at their fingertips, their ambition and academic intelligence will continue to deteriorate. However, those under the age of 30 have actually proven themselves to be more sagacious, street smart, and socially aware than the previous generations. Calling them the dumbest generation is an obvious misnomer.…

Many older individuals have a preconceived notion regarding the Millennial Generation. People from older generations, including Mark Bauerlein, refer to Millennials as the dumbest generation because of their declined general knowledge. According to Sharon Begley, “IQ scores in every country. . . , including the United States, have been rising since the 1930s. Since the tests measure not knowledge but pure thinking capacity. . .…

English professor and successful author, Mark Bauerlein attributes a lack of general knowledge to the development of complex and modernistic technology. Bauerlein claims in his best-selling novel, The Dumbest Generation that those under thirty constitute the “dumbest” generation in contemporary record. However, he does not take into account that people under age thirty have adapted their learning capabilities to this progressive media-focused environment. Bauerlein has yet to acknowledge the benefits that the information age has had on education.…

In Mark Bauerlein’s 2008 book The Dumbest Generation he makes the argument that those under the age of thirty are dumb. Since Bauerlein bases the claim off of “the 2007 Pew survey on “What Americans Know: 1989-2007” (Source 1) we can assume that Bauerlein’s definition of smart is what and how much a person knows, based off the title of the survey. That is truly a poor and incomplete definition of what smart is. If this new generation were truly dumb then it wouldn’t make sense that “IQ scores in every country that measures them, including the United States, have been rising since the 1930s’…

People such as Mark Bauerlein have begun to claim that our generation is the “dumbest” generation. If he means that we are more silent than previous generations, that statement would be correct. We tend to spend our time writing and communicating through technology, whether it be social media or texting. Therefore we are fairly silent...from our mouths. While preceding generations may claim that we are the “dumbest” generation, we are actually much more advanced than they were and on the brink of a literary breakthrough.…

Feminism has been around for many years and will continue to remain part of our immediate future. The term “Votes for Women” was coined in 1872 when the British women were determined to fight for their rights of being treated equally to the male gender. These women eventually were able to receive their rights of voting and therefore make it possible for the women of the twentieth century to exercise their right to vote. Even though this right has been given to the women of now, they still face hardships and unequal rights then that of men.…
