Alcohol is a psychoactive drug, it alters attention emotion, judgement, memory, time sense, self control, and/or perception (Coon, Mitterer). It is a depressant, also known as a downer. Alcohol is briskly absorbed from the stomach and small intestine and travels to the bloodstream of the drinker (Volkow, Nora D). Being drunk puts individuals in a drug-altered state of consciousness (Coon, Mitterer). A well known side effect of drinking is a hangover. After an individual has consumed an excessive amount of alcohol, they may experience a hangover. Hangovers are common but do not always occur. They typically involve painful headaches, throwing up, feeling nauseated, and more.
