The Dove Ad Analysis

The Dove ad consists of three women dressed in bath towels. From left to right, their ethnicity appear to be African American, Hispanic and Caucasian. All women are lined up next to each other and leveled in the ad, suggesting that they are all equal. They seem to be filled with joy, and their gestures have a sense of confidence. There is no male present in the ad, and women are front and centered in a position of power.
All of them look at the camera/audience. Their gazes are inviting people to look at them or their body, and their body language shows that they enjoy being watched. The gender of the spectator is rather ambiguous. However, the ad target towards women since the all the models are women, and all of them are covered up, only showing their arms and legs. Therefore, the ad becomes more acceptable to the female audience since the models in the ad are not overly sexualized to attract male audiences.
The image is trying to create a comfortable environment for the audience to look at these women. The gaze is supposed to feel professional and unbiased. The ad makes efforts to bring in more racial diversities into the picture. It shows women with different ethnicity are confident and comfortable in their own skins and it serves as a good entryway to widen the stereotypical beliefs about beauty. Since the product image is associated with self imagery and confidence. The viewer can draw the connection between Dove body wash and happiness. The ad promotes women to take actions and choose their own happiness. Women are no longer rely on men for support, and they are fully self-aware and focus on a goal to achieve success in life. I think this is a good underlying message even if the ad’s main objective is to sell
