Domestic violence exists within all cultures, ethnic backgrounds, religious faiths, age groups, education levels, social classes, income or economic levels, and sexual orientations. Domestic violence can occur between many different kinds of couples: married or dating couples, those who live in rural areas and urban areas, those that cohabitate or live separately, couples that had been formerly married or had dated, and between heterosexual or same-sex couples. It also happens within relatives for example violent parents to children. Furthermore, sexual intimacy is not required to be present in a relationship in order for domestic violence to occur. Domestic violence is a social issue that affects everyone whether directly or indirectly. It is a global social disease. This paper will discuss the prevalence, types, and effects of domestic violence, causes and remedies of domestic violence victims including law. Domestic violence which also referred to as domestic abuse, spousal abuse, battering, family violence, intimate partner violence (IPV), is defined as a pattern of abusive behaviors by one partner against another in an intimate relationship such as marriage, dating, family, or cohabitation (Freeman, 2008).
