Digital and Social Media in Our Lives It is hard to imagine that only a decade ago, social and digital media was a little more than a growing trend. In 1995 less than 1 percent of the world’s population was connected to the internet (internetlivestats.com); today about 46 percent of the world’s population has internet connection (internetworldstats.org 1). In the United States, about 89 per cent of households are connected to the internet (interneworldstats.org 2). Also, both social and digital media has had a significant impact on our culture, the way we conduct business, the way we communicate, and on the world at large. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube are just some of the most popular web sites on the internet. Today, electronic gadgets such as iPhones, iPods, and iPads are a must have for people of all ages. Can you remember the last time you were in a public place in this country and didn’t notice that most the people around you were bent over a digital screen, thumbing a connection to somewhere else? I see it all the time and it tells me that everything has officially and permanently changed. Both digital and social media are so embedded in our culture, they’re as necessary as breathing. In 2003 a social networking site called Friendster was attracting a huge amount of traffic. MySpace took notice and decided to copy it.
