Treatments Options There are many different types of therapies that people can choose from when trying to treat MDD. The first step in determining the type of therapy that will be needed to treat someone suffering from MDD is to determine the severity of the disorder. By determining the severity of MDD, therapists can determine which treatment approach for the patient will yield the best results. Treatments for MDD range from psychotherapy, including; Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) to treatment using psychopharmacology which is treatment of MDD using psychotropic medications (antidepressants) such as; selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI’s) and Tricyclics (Comer,2015). There are even more extreme treatments in the physiological approach to treating MDD which include Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and certain controversial psychosurgeries such as Cingulotomy, deep brain stimulation, and Capsulotomy. This paper will specifically focus on three types of treatment that are known to treat mild-moderate cases of MDD. The treatments that will be further explored are CBT, antidepressant medications, and ECT.
