Physical therapy is a career that helps patients that have been injured in an accident or have birth defects. Physical therapy will always be needed around the world. Physical therapist examine each individual and develop a plan using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability. Physical therapists formed their first professional association in 1921. It was called the American Women's Physical Therapist Association. By the 1940s, the name was changed to the American Physical Therapist Association. Currently there is about 185,500 people listed as physical therapists. Physical therapists run test for their patients to determine where the injury is. They help them get back on their feet by performing stretches and exercises based on the patient's need.
