The education I am being provided by The Ohio State University is the biggest step I have taken thus far toward my career goal of achieving a Doctorate of Physical Therapy. I have only ever dreamed of being in a professional field in which helping others is the focus of my day. In particular, my experiences in life have all pushed me toward a field of health. What has drawn me toward the pursuit of physical therapy specifically has been the two times in my life where this sort of rehab was necessary for my own recovery. This piqued my interest and showed me first-hand the workings of a physical therapist. Not only did this shape my career goals, but pushing through the adversity built my character in ways that other experiences cannot. The rigorous curriculum of the Exercise Science major and College of Education and Human Ecology staff will give me the best shot at achieving my future goals. …show more content…

It is with immense delight and enormous pleasure for me to highly recommend Sabrina Melendez for the USS Pittsburgh (SSN 720) Scholarship. Sabrina came to Sacred Heart University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program (class of 2018) after graduating with departmental honors from Skidmore College in Health and Exercise Science. Of note, she is certified as an exercise physiologist by the American College of Sports Medicine. In a study of factors that predicts success in physical therapy training, students who major in exercise science has an advantage over their peers as they typically do well in Doctor of Physical Therapy program. Unsurprisingly, Sabrina fits this evidence-based profile precisely.…

Due to his compassion, determination, and knowledge, I was placed in an environment to succeed. Not only did he care about facilitating my rehabilitation, but he also cared about me as an individual.…

My grandpa, although I was not alive at the time, was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre in his 50s and was told he would be paralyzed at midlife. I watched OTs rehabilitate my grandma after her stroke so that she could complete important daily tasks again, like holding a pencil and writing with clarity. The dream of becoming an Occupational Therapist can be traced back to my original desire of contributing to exercise-related fields, which derived from those years I committed myself to track and field training before college. During that period of time, I experienced great pleasure, heavy frustration, even grief, and let alone physical discomfort. Fortunately, those diverse experiences have given rise to my own physical and mental growth and have made me realize athletes are not merely people who exercise. For me, having been an athlete is a part of being who I am now, and it shapes my attitude toward how I should live a life in the meantime. This is also why I am studying Exercise Science for my bachelor degree, hoping that I will, one day,…
