Developmentally Appropriate Early Literacy Strategies
According to Durrell (1998), learning to read and write is important to the success of the child both in school and later in life. The level of progress that children show in reading and wring will greatly affect the way the way they will function in school and how they will contribute actively in the current literate society. In spite of the fact that child’s reading and writing skills develop throughout life, early childhood is the most crucial period in literacy development. Therefore, various developmentally appropriate strategies are available for teaching language and literacy for children between the age of 2-6 years. These include coming up with instructions that focus on foundational literacy skills, and provision of explicit and systematic instructions in vocabulary.
First, designing of instructions that concentrate on foundational literacy abilities. This is one of the main developmentally appropriate strategy that help promote literacy development among children. It involves interactive storybook reading in classroom, involving children in games and that help them identify alphabetical letters (Durrell, 1998). Additionally, children in the early childhood period can be involved in interactive experiences with both print and language through poems, songs and nursery

Early childhood educators need to use various indicators for instance, reading and writing performance, observing children’s’ oral language, and evaluations of their work in order to be able to effectively monitor the progress that the child is making in reading and writing development. Additionally, children in early childhood not be given multiple choice standardized tests for testing there reading and writing abilities, but rather administered with reading od alphabets and drawings that help them develop their literacy
