The student I did the DRA with is Luke. He is a fifth grade student who is currently reading at a first grade level. When doing leveled reading, Luke reads at a level H. With that being said, I administered the DRA at a level 13. Luke was able to read this passage in 2 minutes and 10 seconds, with a total of five errors. This placed the student at an independent level, with 96% accuracy. Throughout his reading, he read with minimal expression and appeared to be rushing through this passage. Additionally, it is likely that Trent struggles with comprehension of both spoken and written language as well as writing. This conclusion was drawn when he did poorly on sentence formulation and paragraph summarization/comprehension. The result of such weakness demonstrates that Trent is lacking language understanding and not only does he likely struggle with academics, but he could also struggle socially when expected to carry on conversations with peers and adults.…

There was little inflection or intonation, and her pace was very slow and choppy. The assessor will work with Kayla on comprehension skills while reading a chapter book together.…

Jenna, I think you did a great job on the case study. I definitely got the impression that these are the exact types of assessments that would be utilized in schools across the country. My father is a 4th grade teacher and he uses Developmental Reading Assessments all the time; or he works directly with a reading specialist or special educator when they use this assessment. A DRA is a great formative assessment that is flexible, reliable, and can be administered once a year or once a day (in the case of struggling readers). I like DRA assessments because it is an assessment that teachers can administer themselves with no outside assistance.…
