The two assessments that measure early literacy skills for students in grades K-2 are Early Literacy Skills Assessment (ELSA) by High/Scope and the Children’s Progress Academic Assessment (CPAA). The ELSA evaluates his or her understanding, “phonological awareness, the alphabet principle, and concepts (DeBruin-Parecki, 2005).” This process consists of three separate forms that are to be completed by the assessor throughout several evaluation activities. The first form is completed during a collaborative reading session with the student; second form is to be filled in after the completion of each session conducted and the third form which is a summary of the second form is to be finalized after it is completely filled in.
