In the architectural, engineering and construction industry there is a growing awareness that the effective design of sustainable buildings results from an accurate optimization process of all the variables that are involved and interrelated in meeting the various sustainability goals in the field of energy, indoor environmental quality, water management, and sustainable materials [1][2].
For that reason, current frameworks for the building design process rely on a high degree of interdisciplinary collaboration between all the professionals involved (architects, engineers, consultants, etc.) from the early design stage to the delivery of the building. Such frameworks are often referred to as “integrated design process” (IDP), for example in IEA Task 23 [3], “integrated delivery process” (IDP) in AIA Guide [4], or “integrative process” (IP) in ANSI Standard Guide 2.0.[5].
In general, they are more than a simple defined procedure, with no obligatory requirements around their structure. IDP is defined as “an approach to building design that seeks to achieve high performance on a wide variety of well-defined environmental and social goals while staying within budgetary and scheduling constraints” [3], instead IP is “a discovery process that seeks to design and construct buildings that are cost-effective over both the short and the long terms, in a way that unifies technical and living systems into an increasingly life-enhancing whole system” [6].
