King's Cross Urban Design

The Kings Cross development all started back in 2001. It is situated in the center of London on the same site as an old railway. There was great discussion what to do with the 64-acre site; they decided something everyone could use. The site was known for being a lost industry but now they are redeveloping it into a mixed-use city centre. Having decided to become mixed use site it include a huge array of different type of possible operation but there will be over 2,000 square foot of residential space and ‘3.4 million square foot of office space.’1 There are a number of urban design principles to be assessed when looking at this certain development.

One of the main reasons that there is this sense of place around this development is purely down to the understanding of the urban design principles. One of the main principle would be that how this development should be well connected to all different types of public infrastructure such as trains and public roads. Kings

By incorporating business into the scheme this can be seen as trying to fund this success and the overall prosperity with the view of long-term success. With the number of different buildings, green space and shared space this would be able to sustain the value of the land, this a key principle to any development plan and especially this one King’s Cross. The inclusion of green and shared space would benefit a number of other aspects such as it would engage the new community but also put the view of pedestrians first. The sustainability of keeping the value of the land could be down to a large factor of community relations. By boosting the community relations this can also have social and economic benefits. This would help one of the main Urban Design Principles that is the long-term success and one that can be accessed by a large
