M1 - Justify the selection of suitable materials and techniques for use in the construction of substructures for low-rise domestic and commercial buildings, for two different tutor-specified scenarios

Concrete is used for foundations as when compressed, concrete can suffer extremely high compressive stresses before any type of cracking of failure occurs which makes it an ideal substance for supporting large masses such as buildings. Concrete will also be less prone to movement. Also concrete can be made in a large variety of strength depending on the required resistance of the foundation by the amount of the sand and gravel used when mixing, the amount of water and the ratio of cement to sand to gravel. Also the cost of making a concrete is significantly lower than the cost of making a material that will perform in the same way.
Hard core
This material must be bought in order to make sure it includes the right numbers of sand and stone, the usual amount would be around 20mm to dust, this will provide good help when compacted and will provide a good sold base for the layers above.

To overcome poor tensile strength, steel bars are embedded in concrete to form a composite material called reinforced concrete (RC). The use of RC construction in the modern world stems from the wide availability of its ingredients – reinforcing steel as well as concrete.
